Pair Production Evaluation
Pre Production.
Alex was very helpful creating the story, and coming up with the different shots for the story board, and the music, it was also good that he was happy to act in our film, and let us use his house.
Production.
During production Alex helped by being in front and behind the camera, we were also able to change a few scenes due to problems with the story and shots, but Alex's input has helpful and we were able to sort it out.
Post Production.
Alex was helpful during editing although he didn't go hands on but his input was good and we were able to edit the film easily as long as premier pro didn't fail on us as it usually did.

The genre we are going to is action/thriller and the title is "Them". Some ideas that we will explore are fear, running does not solve everything, escape. Emotions that we wish to evoke include fear, perhaps some hopelessness. The impact we want this to have is to make to audience empathise with the characters and become consumed by the story . the story follows two characters and the opening shows the moment in which they meet and for one character the moment his life changes and for the other he brings an Innocent bystander into the depths of his problems.

Analyse-Masked Stalker
SCREAM:
Analyse:
Masked stalker-The masked stalker in SCREAM symbolised the stereotypical antagonist in classic horror films who toyed with his victims and took them to the brink of fear before killing them. An example of this is the recurring "rules of the horror film" and brings it into the typical horror genre but puts an unexpected twist to it. It also included the strong female lead which was a big part in other horrors such as Halloween and rosemary`s baby, but even though she fell into the normal stereotypical girl lead (virgin,no drugs or drinking) she falls out of it towards the end (by having sex) but still remains strong and is able to take down the killers. In this way SCREAM twists the "rules" of horror films, but also makes fun at its self and other classic horror films.
HALLOWEEN:
Analyse:
Masked stalker-The masked stalker in Halloween symbolises the change in youth after the 1960s. Because of the influence of drugs and sex caused people to stereotype teenagers as reckless delinquents. But the female protagonist shows that but not partaking in the "crude" acts she is able to fight off the masked stalker that terrorises her when her friends who have fallen into the stereotype, were easily killed by the stalker. This added to the commercial success of the film because it showed that people (teenagers) were punished for doing wrong and that the protagonist who remained good survived.

Explain-Masked Stalker
SCREAM:
Explain:
Masked Stalker-The masked stalker was used in SCREAM to create the horror and life threatening situations in the film. The ghost face killer was masked to create tension between the characters in the film, as they didn't know who they could trust and we at points convinced it was someone they knew. But as the plot thickened and the situation became more drastic the killers messed with their victims to change the ideas that they had of the killer to manipulate the outcome of the night. The audience is kept in the dark about the killers identity and the switching up of the killers made it hard to tell who was the real killer, and the audience like the characters in the film ended up suspecting anyone who comes into the story line. He was also masked to scare their victims during their final moments and make the event more brutal than it would have been.
HALLOWEEN:
Explain:
Masked Stalker-The masked stalker in Halloween acted as the antagonist to the story. He was an escaped mental patient who was reveled at the start showing him murdering his sister and then 16 years later escaping the hospital and returning to his home town to commit more murders. the tension is broken at the start and there is no mystery about who the killer is as he is instantly reveled and named as Michael Myers. But the suspense and horror builds as the audience knows that he is a deranged psychopath and has no motive for killing only that he takes enjoyment from it. But the victims in the movie have no clue who he is, what hes done and what hes going to do to them. He is masked because it is Halloween night and so could hide his face without people asking questions. It is also used in remembrance of his first murder this was also on Halloween night and he was dressed on a clown outfit. His mask also makes his appearance more creepy and adds to the horror of the film.

describe - Masked stalker
SCREAM:
Describe:
Masked stalker-The masked stalker in scream is the ghost face killer. He wears a long black cloak and a screaming mask which was adapted from The Scream painting. This demented costume adds to the horror and brutal nature of the murders especially in the opening scene where he kills and guts two high school students after leading them through their dark and suspenseful last moments. His appearances are not always scary for example when he traps Tatum (the best friend) in the garage, he instantly reveals himself. And his trademark phone calls became less common towards the end as he had trapped his victums in an isolated house and was free to manipulate his victums as he wants. He is revealed to be both Billy and Stu. This is unexpected and added to the suspense of the film because it was hard to guess who the ghost face killer was until they were revealed at the end.
HALLOWEEN
Describe:
Masked stalker-The masked stalker in Halloween was Micheal Myers an escaped mental patient, who had been locked up for 16 years for murdering his older sister on halloween night while dressed in a clown outfit. But 16 years later he escapes the asylum and returns to his home town to wreck havoc on its towns people on halloween night. His well planned out killing spree takes place on a single night in a single street and it takes a long time for him to kill anyone, but after his first victim is choked to death in her car the suspense builds and the situation becomes more drastic for the victims. Micheal wears a Captain Kirk mask to mimic the clown mask he had on at the start, and as before has no real reason for commiting the murders. And in the end is seen to escape the scene after being shot and stabbed multiple times and you were never too sure if he was really dead and as it turned out he wasn`t. This left you confused and a little on edge as you knew he was not dead and would be back to finish what he started.

Script/dialogue.
There isn't much dialogue in this scene. The bulk of it is in the news interview where they bring up one of the main themes in the film, which is the threat of nuclear war. They talk about the doomsday clock which is the count down towards the potential nuclear war with russia and if it is at all possible that the war will happen, the three people disscus this point but come to no solid conlusion as they all have diffrent points of view on the subject. In this conversation one of the main characters is bought up ,Dr manhatten and the hand he will have in this war. The other dialogue is between the comedian and the masked man though the masked man dosent speek, but this is sparce and occurs before the fight when the Comedian states "Just a matter of time I s'pose" This leads us to believe that he knew this was coming which as the film continues we find out that it was a planed murder and was used to allude the watchmen from the bigger picture which is revealed at the end. The dialogue doesnt play a big part in this opening but does open you up for the rest of the fils story.
shot size / angle + camera movement.
Close up shots of the Comedian, punches also in slowmotion, the comedians gun fireing, the bullet hole in the tv, the masked man kicking in the door, the Comedians blood splashing onto his badge. The close ups are used to highlight the impact of the action during the fight these position us right in the action as the shots are not quite at the attackers point of view but let us see what he is seeing . wide angle shots are used to give a larger view of the battle and see the effects that it has on there surroundings. for example when the comedian is chucked across his apartment into a glass table the camera follows and gives a wide view of the event.

Sound.
Mostly digetic sound is used in this scene. The sounds of the fight between the Comedian and the masked guy are amplified, the hits are louder and the sound of glass smashing is always dominant. The happy music contrasts against the brutal fight, at the start of the fight and at the end, the amplified hits are apparent in the rest of the film but the music during the other fights is mostly fast paced and sets the mood of a hard hitting, adrenalin pumping fight. So the music sets us up for the Comedians loss at the end of the scene. This scene mostly relied on digetic sound to make the fight the most dominant feature in the scene and draw our attention to the effect that it had on the characters and environment around them.

Lighting.
Mostly dark lighting is used in this scene. This is used to create an dark tone and a feeling of isolation this was shown by the darkness around the edges of the screen and the heavy use of shadowing in the comedians apartment. This was important for the fight to make it seem more life threating, this also means that we focous on the action as it is highlighted on the screen. The lighting also dulls the colours in the Comedians apartment making his things look old and more fitting for the time, this is shown by the diffrent lighting in the news interview which was quite colourful and bright.

Genre/atmosphere.
The first technique used in this film to set the scene was an extreme close up of the Comedians smiley face badge, and then zoomed out to show the comedian in the kitchen in his dark apartment smoking and watching tv.this creates a mild tone and leads us slowly into the film.
This is followed by a point of view shot at the tv, this then zooms in and the scene changes into a news interview where the basic camera shots are used to develop the setting of a news interview. this adds a dramatic and sad mood created by the themes of the interview.
The scene then goes back to the comedians apartment the channel is changed and the song 'unforgettable' starts and sets up a light mood. there is a point of view shot of the comedians apartment door and then an over the shoulder shot of the other side of the door and then the door is kicked in, in slow motion and the comedian stands and says " just a matter of time I spose" and the fight commences. the dark lighting of the apartment gives the scene a isolated look and the smooth music contrasts against the destructive fight that takes place, this changes the tone to more intense and hardened look.

why did it appeal to you?
This opening appealed to me because it included an intense fight scene, with high impact slowmotion and gritty destruction of the comedians apartment, this set me up for the fight scenes later on in the film in which the same techniques are used and the mood is the same throughout . Another aspect which appealed to me was the establishment of the possibilty of the threat of nuclear war with Russia. This was shown in the form of a news interview where the host and guests discussed the possibility of the Russians attacking America, which is one of the main themes in the movie.

How does it fit into the film as a whole?
This opening fits into the film because it gives us the two main themes of the story. One is that the watchmen are being targeted and set up by an unknown threat. This is shown by the masked assailant breaking into the comedians apartment and murdering him. The second theme is the threat of nuclear war which is shown through a news interview where they discuss the possibility of the Russians starting a nuclear war with America . These themes set the mood of the film and stay within the story throughout the film.

Breifly describe the opening
This scene starts with the elderly comedian sitting in his apartment smoking and watching tv. A masked man kicks in the door and a fight breaks out. The comedian is then thrown out the window after stating that "it`s all a joke". The scene ends with a close up on the comedians smiley face badge showing the splater of blood that covers it before it falls to the ground.

Intro Choice
I chose to do the watchmen intro. I chose this because it did a good job of setting the scene of a gritty 1985, where superheroes protect the streets and villans lurk in the shadows. It also shows how the public have responded to the heroes over time, leading up to their eventual disbandment. It shows examples of love, hate and murder which isn't uncommon for the watchmen, as it is shown in the opening scene and the opening credits. The music in the opening credits fit the imagery that was shown. It showed a passing of time for the world and for the watchmen including events such as the J.F.Kennedy asassination and the election of Richard Nixon. The credits ended with the words "who watches the watchmen" tagged on a window during a riot. This implies that the feelings for the watchmen have changed and that their role as protectors is no longer needed.
